2021 and the few previous years have been great for virtual game photographers and traditional photographers alike. The rapid advancement in technology, together with how developers are integrating photo mode’s into most of today’s games, makes it very exciting for anyone interested in virtual game photography. Here we look at the games in 2021 for photographers that steal all of the thunder through photo mode and will likely be great for years to come. The include Forza Horizon 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding & of course Red Dead Redemption 2. All of which have some of the best photo modes around. Perfect for the aspiring game photographer.
FORZA HORIZON 5
HORIZON ZERO DAWN
RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2
FORZA HORIZON 5 PHOTO MODE
Forza Horizon 5’s photo mode is probably one of the best we’ve seen this year. If you love your motorsport photography or are just looking to dip your toes into this crazy world of virtual in-game photography, Forza Horizon 5 will take some beating. Epic graphics, with super intuitive photography controls make this a great choice for any gamer or photographer looking to get creative.
HORIZON ZERO DAWN 5 PHOTO MODE
Horizon Zero Dawn’s Photo mode is spectacular! The weather and lighting effects are some of the best I’ve seen from any game in 2021. Matching this with an excellent implementation of photo mode Horizon Zero Dawn is a no brainer for virtual photographers looking to dive deep into epic vistas and an easy to follow story mode that will guide you through the whole game. The character detail is also exceptional. So if you’re someone who likes to get in close and shoot inspiring landscapes, then Horizon Zero Dawn’s photo mode is for you.
RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 PHOTO MODE
The biggest thing Red Dead Redemption 2’s photo mode has going for it is the storyline. The story just hooks you in! Yes, it has excellent graphics and amazing landscapes with a superb photo mode, but it’s Red Dead Redemption 2’s extremely captivating storyline that hooks you. You can easily lose hours wandering around this open world, writing your own story and documenting your journey along the way. It is a great photo mode for anyone who feels they are as much an in-game photographer as a player.
DEATH STRANDING PHOTO MODE
Now this is one for the traditional landscape photographers. Death Stranding’s photo mode is epic. I’m not going to say its the outright best this year but it is my favourite. The most cinematic game I’ve ever played, so good, in fact, it almost feels like your inside a movie. The surrounding landscapes, lighting and photo mode are some of the best I’ve seen to date. The photo mode also works with familiar camera controls that you would use in real life, so its the perfect game for traditional photographers looking to dip their toes in to the virtual world.
